A team raided several areas in Dhaka on Monday

Update : 19 Jul 2022, 09:54 AM

In light of government orders to close markets and shops at 8pm to save energy, Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) on Monday snapped power connections from several areas.

A DPDC team raided places under their zones in Dhaka, including Baitul Mukarram, Naya Paltan, and Fakirapool at around 8am, reports Bangla Tribune.

Announcements via microphones were made before the teams disconnected the power connections, said DPDC Managing Director Bikash Dewan

“We had informed every zone that DPDC teams will patrol the areas after 8pm. If they find markets or shops still open, they were asked to request the owners to stop operations. If they refused to do so, they were ordered to snap the power connections,” he told Bangla Tribune.

In order to save electricity and fuel, area-based power cuts for a specific time are set to start on Tuesday.

Production at diesel-run power plants was also stopped on Monday. Hence, 1,000MW less electricity generated, in a bid to tackle the ongoing power and energy crisis.

The government also decided to keep fuel stations closed for a day every week from Tuesday.

Energy Advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury and State Minister for the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid made the decisions at PMO on Monday.
