Police have arrested a BNP leader in Gazipur for his alleged involvement in the murder of Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Syed Mahbub Hossain Masum Ahmed.
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Sheikh Maruf Ahmed, the senior vice president of BNP’s Sreepur Municipality unit in Gazipur on Monday.
PBI Superintendent Mohammad Maksudur Rahman confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
According to police, Masum Ahmed, 27, was hacked to death by unidentified assailants on July 22, 2021 around 3pm in Sreepur Municipality’s Beraiderchala area.
He was first taken to the local Al Hera Hospital and later Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. He was transferred to National Institute of Neuro Science Hospital where he died the next day while undergoing treatment.
His uncle Mofazzal Hossain filed a case with Sreepur Police following the murder. The case was later handed over to PBI.
During the investigation, six people were arrested among whom three people including one Abul Kalam and Harun-ur-Rashid provided confessional statement in front of a court, naming Maruf as the mastermind of the murder.
They said that Maruf killed Masum while stealing papers of a land that they had a dispute over.
