Police arrested a couple for allegedly embezzling Tk20 crore from thousands of people by investing in an online site named “Amazon Crown Imperial” from Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila on Monday.
Later, a case was filed with Shibchar Police Station accusing five others including them, reports Bangla Tribune.
The arrestees are Kamal Hossain, 42, son of Abdus Salam of Jhaukandi village under Dakshin Baheratla union of the upazila and his wife Fahima Akter, 40.
Confirming the matter, Siddharth Brat Kundu, investigating officer (IO) of the case, said the couple was sent to jail by the court on Tuesday. The members of police have stepped up their efforts to nab the remaining members of the gang.
According to Shibchar police station and victims, a campaign was recently launched to double the investment in 21 days.
Around 12,000 people of Shibchar upazila invested Tk20 crore on the site.
At one point, the site suddenly was taken down on July 7. Later, some investors detained Kamal Hossain and his wife Fahima Akter on Monday morning and informed the police.
A victim named Zakir Hossain filed a case with the Shibchar Police Station under the Digital Security Act, accusing five others, including the couple.
