Before victim Swapan Kumar, accused Akhter Hossain Tinku was the acting principal of the college

Akter Hossain Tinku, president of local Awami League and teacher at Mirzapur United Degree College in Narail, has been sacked over the harassment of acting principal Swapan Kumar Biswas.

Narail Sadar Upazila Awami League President Achin Kumar Chakraborty and General Secretary Omar Farooq signed the show cause notice issued on Thursday.

Akhter Hossain Tinku was a teacher at the political science department of Mirzapur United Degree College and president of Bichali Union Awami League in Narail Sadar.

"On June 16, a communal provocative incident took place and was caught on the mobile phone of a student of Mirzapur United Degree College," the notice said.

“In the end, in your presence, the acting principal of the college was brought out wearing a garland of shoes, which is reprehensible, tantamount to humiliating the teaching community. You cannot avoid this responsibility and we believe that you have failed to discharge your duties properly as president," the notice added.

Before Swapan Kumar Biswas, Akhter Hossain Tinku was the acting principal of the college. However, due to violation of seniority, Akter was removed about a year and a half ago and Swapan Kumar was given the responsibility.

According to sources familiar with the matter, a Hindu student of the college on June 18 made a post on Facebook supporting suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma. India's ruling BJP suspended its spokeswoman Sharma in response to comments she had made during a TV debate about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

There was daylong unrest at the college over the post.

It was rumoured that Swapan had sided with the student, following which police escorted him outside the college campus. At the time a group of men forced him to wear a garland of shoes. Swapan apologized to them and later police took him away in their vehicle.

A video of the incident soon went viral on social media, creating outrage. The home minister has assured that the government would ensure proper investigation into the incident that took place in presence of senior officials of the district administration and the police.
