About 2.4 million people in two city corporations in Dhaka metropolis would be vaccinated against cholera.
The vaccination program would be held from Sunday till July 2 between 8am-4pm.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque inaugurated the program on Sunday.
The Infectious Diseases Control Branch of the Department of Health is implementing the program in collaboration with icddr,b.
According to the Department of Health, the oral cholera vaccine should be taken in two doses. The second dose should be taken within 14 days to six months from the first dose.
The two-dose cholera vaccine, called Euvichol-Plus, manufactured by South Korea’s EuBiologics Co Ltd, will be given to those over one year of age.
The vaccine is approved by the World Health Organization. The vaccine is available to all except pregnant women and those who have received any other vaccine in the last 14 days. No other vaccine, including Covid-19 vaccine, can be given within 14 days of receiving this vaccine.
The target is to vaccinate about 5,00,000 residents of Jatrabari, about 4,20,000 in Sabujbagh, about 2,80,000 in Dakshinkhan, about 7,80,000 in Mirpur and about 4,00,000 in Mohammadpur.
Miking is being done locally. The program is being implemented through about 700 vaccination centres.
One vaccination centre has been set up for every thousand household. These include the vaccination centre used in the EPI program, and the Surjer Hashi Medical Clinic.
