Govt to import 102 oxygen generators to meet demand

Health authorities in the country are working to ensure uninterrupted supply of oxygen at government facilities.
Realizing that continuous oxygen supply could be as important as ensuring other health care facilities for patients with critical conditions, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) is on the verge of completing the import of 102 oxygen generators.
Additional Director General (ADG) of DGHS, Prof Dr Ahmedul Kabir disclosed the matter in a virtual briefing on Monday afternoon.
While replying to a question over their preparations for the treatment of the Covid patients, Dr Ahmedul Kabir said liquid oxygen plants have been installed in 30 hospitals.
“We are going to import 102 oxygen generators to meet oxygen demand in government hospitals. The paperwork in this regard is at last stage,” he added.
He, however, said that the country has the necessary capacity to provide oxygen to patients. “We have a capacity that is more than the demand for oxygen,” he added.
According to the ADG, the country now has a capacity of supplying 250 ton oxygen which was 150 ton during the peak of infections last year.
Director (hospital) of DGHS, Dr Farid Hossain Miah, last month told the Dhaka Tribune that they have installed at least 62 oxygen plants in several hospitals across the country.
30 more would be installed soon, he added.
Hospital and clinic unit sources told the Dhaka Tribune that DGHS first initiated to install around 130 central oxygen systems in the government hospitals in June 2020.
During the second wave in the country, when beta and delta variants spread much, the need for oxygen fell severely and therefore, they concentrated on building storage capacity as well.
Although the government finally focused on installing liquid oxygen plants for the hospitals during the second half of last year, most of the hospitals in the country now have gaseous storage for the central oxygen system. That is why the government wants to go for a more sustainable system, they said.
“The generators, we are focusing on, would generate 100-to-1000-liter Oxygen from air in a day and so. And therefore, their dependency on suppliers will decrease,” Prof Ahmedul explained.
He said that they are trying to establish a sustainable system for the patients visiting government hospitals.
