Heavy rainfall, swelling rivers in northeast Bangladesh

Teesta River may cross danger level in the next 24 hours

All the major rivers in the northeastern region of Bangladesh have been rising rapidly, and are expected to swell further over the next 48 hours due to heavy rainfall.

According to the met office, there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northeastern and adjoining upstream region of the country, which may affect Surma, Old Surma, Sarigowain, Khowai, Jadukata, Someswari, Bhogai-Kangsha rivers.

The rain and the rising trend of the river may also result in a short-term flood situation in the adjoining low-lying areas, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.

Due to the chance of heavy rainfall in the adjoining upstream, Teesta, Dharala and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region may rise rapidly at times in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Teesta River may cross danger level at Dalia point in the next 24 hours. 

However, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Padma rivers are in a steady state, while the Ganges River is in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours.
