Anisul: DSA reforms by September, not under any prescription

The government is taking steps to correct misuses of the act, says the minister

Update : 04 Jun 2023, 10:01 PM

Law Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday reiterated that the government is working to amend some sections of the Digital Security Act (DSA) by September.

“This does not depend on any prescription given by anyone,” the minister said while talking to reporters after a function to inaugurate the 150th Refresher Course for judicial officers involved in trials of corruption cases, at Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) in Dhaka.

Anisul's response came when reporters asked him about the recent comments by UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Olivier De Schutter, BSS reported.

After his visit to Bangladesh, Schutter said under the DSA, journalists, human rights defenders, opposition politicians and academics have been detained for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and opinion.

Anisul said: “I don't think it's the statement of the United Nations. Whenever we thought the act was misused, we acknowledged that and we are taking steps to correct those misuses. Right at the end of 2019, when DSA was being misused and abused, I said it is needed to stop the misuse and abuse through discussion.

“I said it clearly that DSA will need some corrections and we are holding talks on that and even received the technical note. Considering all these opinions, an amendment will be brought to DSA by September.”
