Bangladesh was the world champion in corruption when BNP was in power, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said.

“Critiquing the government about corruption and loot does not suit BNP,” he said at a press conference arranged to give the party's reaction over the proposed budget for FY24 in Dhaka.

Quader added that the budget's objective is to build a Smart Bangladesh in line with Bangabandhu's vision, aiming to achieve the Sonar Bangla by 2041.

The budget reflects extensive deliberations on saving agriculture and ensuring food production, the senior Awami League leader said.

Referring to the statements made by BNP leaders, Quader expressed his concern, stating that BNP leaders words imply a lack of understanding of the country's economic challenges and portray a distorted reality.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader also emphasized that Bangladesh is not currently facing any severe crisis in terms of food production.

Quader mentioned that the country's debt is relatively manageable and in harmony with the nation's economy, with only 2% of the GDP being foreign loans.

One of the reasons behind the global crisis is currency devaluation. Today, the entire world is facing the consequences of inflation. Bangladesh's inflation rate stands at 8.4%. The proposed budget aims to bring it down to 6%," said the minister.
