11 killed after train rams into microbus in Chittagong

They were tourists heading towards Khoiyachora waterfall, police say

At least 11 people were killed and five others were injured after a train hit a microbus at a level crossing in Mirsharai upazila of Chittagong on Friday.

The accident occurred at around 1:45pm at the unmanned level crossing near Bara Takia railway station, said Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mirsharai police station.

Among the deceased, four were teachers, six students, and one driver.

They are Ziaul Haque Sajib, 22, Wahidul Alam Jisan, 23, Mostafa Masud Rakib, 19, Riduan Chowdhury, 22, Moshab Ahmed Hisam, 16, Md Mahim, 17, and Sagar, 17, Iqbal Hossain Maruf, 17, Ayatul Islam, 17, Mohammad Hasan, 18, and Golam Mostafa Niru, 26.

Later on Friday evening, police detained Saddam Hossain, the gateman of the crossing, in the incident, said Chittagong Railway police station OC Md Nazim Uddin.

Earlier in the afternoon, the railway authorities formed a five-member probe committee, led by Divisional Transport Officer of Railway (Eastern Region) Ansar Ali, to investigate the incident.

Members Of The Fire Service Recovers The Microbus Collected

Jahangir Hossain, general manager of Railway (Eastern Region), confirmed the matter.

He said the committee was asked to submit a report as soon as possible.

The other four members of the committee are - Divisional Executive Engineer-1 Abdul Hamid, Divisional Mechanical Engineer Zahid Hasan, Railway Security Force Commandant Rezanur Rahman and Divisional Medical Officer Anwar Hossain.

According to OC Kabir, the Chittagong-bound Mahanagar Provati express rammed into the microbus, dragging it several hundred metres down the railway track.

“Among the microbus passengers, 11 were killed on the spot while the rest five were badly injured in the incident,” he added.

Anisur Rahman, deputy director of Chittagong Divisional Office of Fire Service, said: “The firefighters recovered the bodies of the deceased from the scene. The injured were rescued and sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.”

Chittagong Railway Superintendent of Police Md Hasan Chowdhury told Bangla Tribune that members of the Fire Service started a rescue operation to recover the microbus.
