The Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection (DNCRP) has slapped Shohoz, the ticketing partner of Bangladesh Railway, with a fine of Tk2 lakh for mismanagement in ticketing.

DNCRP Director General AHM Shafiquzzaman confirmed the matter on Wednesday.

Shohoz had been fined under Section 53 of the Consumers' Right Protection Act, 2009, Shafiquzzaman said.

Section 53 of the act states: “If any service provider, by negligence, irresponsibility or carelessness, damaging money, health or life of a service receiver, he shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or with a fine not exceeding Tk2 lakh, or with both.”

Mohiuddin Rony, a fourth-year year student of Dhaka University's theatre and performance studies department, who has been protesting mismanagement and corruption in Bangladesh Railway, filed a complaint against Shohoz after falling victim to its dodgy e-ticketing system.

The DNCRP, on the basis of the complaint, found that there was indeed mismanagement of Shohoz in the sale of tickets.

The agency said it would call Bangladesh Railway officials to account as well.
