Abdur Rauf Talukder, the new governor of Bangladesh Bank, assumed office on Tuesday.
He will replace the recently departed Fazle Kabir as the 12th governor of
Bangladesh Bank, confirmed Central Bank Executive Director and spokesman Sirajul Islam.
Abdur Rauf Talukder was welcomed by the Bangladesh Bank employees following his arrival at 10am on Tuesday.
On Monday, finance secretary Abdur Rauf Talukder was appointed as the new governor of Bangladesh Bank by the government.
Abdur Rauf Talukder will hold office till August 2023.
To join the governorship, he had to voluntarily retire from government service.
The president's office approved his voluntary retirement application from Monday.
Abdur Rauf Talukder was appointed as Finance Secretary on July 17, 2018.
Earlier, in October 2017, he became the additional secretary of the Finance Department.
Prior to that, he had been the senior assistant secretary, deputy secretary and joint secretary of the department.
He is also responsible for the implementation of various projects under the Finance Department.
Rauf, a BCS 1985 batch officer, joined the government service as an officer in the "Secretariat Cadre".
A decade and a half ago, the secretariat cadre was abolished and merged with the administration cadre.
During his career, Rauf Talukder served in various government ministries. He specializes in various fields including financial management, especially in the formulation of the country's budget.
He gained expertise by participating in workshops on economics in various countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Later he used those experiences in Bangladesh.
Rauf played an important role in creating various incentive packages to boost the country's economy during the epidemic. His advice on maintaining the macroeconomic stability of the country is commendable at the state level.
In addition to various positions in the Finance Department, Rauf Talukder has the experience of being the deputy registrar of the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industry and the first secretary of the Bangladesh Embassy in Malaysia. He was also the assistant secretary in the Ministry of Food and the Ministry of Information.
Rauf Talukder was born in 1964 in the Tarakandi village in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj. He holds an MBA degree from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of Dhaka University. He then took an MSc degree from Birmingham University in the UK.
