3 Shariatpur MPs miss Padma Bridge opening ceremony after testing Covid positive

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Padma Bridge with great fanfare on Saturday morning

Three MPs from Shariatpur were unable to attend the grand celebration of the much-anticipated Padma Bridge inauguration ceremony after testing Covid-19 positive.

They are Shariatpur-1 MP Md Iqbal Hossain, Deputy Minister for Water Resources and Shariatpur-2 MP AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem, and Shariatpur-3 MP Nahim Razzaq.

They lawmakers shared their reason behind absence on social media on Saturday.

They wrote: “Today is a historic and unforgettable day for the people of Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, is inaugurating the Padma Bridge of our dreams. We have been working for the last one month to make this event a success.

“Unfortunately for us, (we tested three times) we are not able to attend the event as all three of us were Covid positive on Friday night. Thank you and gratitude to the people of Bangladesh for attending such a colourful event. We thank the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for inaugurating the dream Padma Bridge.”

Awami League central leaders started the meeting at 9am at Mawa point.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, chief whip in parliament Nur e Alam Chowdhury Liton, Awami League Presidium member Dr Abdur Razzaque, Shahjahan Khan, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, and Abdur Rahman, among others, spoke at the rally.

Awami League Publicity Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap and Organizing Secretary Mirza Azam jointly conducted the program.
