Flood situation deteriorates further in northern districts

Around 250,000 people have been marooned in Kurigram

Major rivers were flowing above danger mark at ten monitoring points in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts at 9am yesterday, further worsening the flood situation.  

The Brahmaputra was flowing above danger level at different points in Kurigram and Gaibandha districts, inundating different low-lying and char areas yesterday morning.

The Brahmaputra was flowing 51cm above danger level at Chilmari point of Kurigram and 4cm above danger level in Gaibandha town in the morning, said the Water Development Board.

The Dharla was flowing above DM by 44cm at Kurigram and Ghagot by 32cm at Gaibandha points at 9am yesterday.

250,000 people marooned in Kurigram

In Kurigram, about 250,000 people of more than 200 chars in 49 unions have been marooned. Rowmari upazila is the worst-hit area as one lakh people have been stranded there in the floodwaters.

Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rezaul Karim said control rooms have been opened in the deputy commissioner's office and in each upazila to tackle the situation. “361 shelters and various educational institutions are kept ready.”

The cross dams adjacent to Sardob, Bangturghat and Jatrapur market are at the risk of collapse.

In Gaibandha, although the Teesta is flowing below danger level, the other rivers, including the Brahmaputra, have swollen.

According to the Water Development Board, apart from Brahmaputra, the Ghaghat river in Gaibandha town is flowing 32cm above danger level, inundating at least 35 chars and low-lying areas infour upazilas.

Abu Raihan, executive engineer of the Water Development Board, said the water level may continue to increase in the next few days. People are taking shelter on dams to save their lives and property.

With the rise in the water level in the Brahmaputra, the river basin areas of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazila have been inundated and standing crops, particularly jute and summer vegetables, have gone under flood water.

Hundreds of char people of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazilas have been marooned by the floods.

Flood situation deteriorates further in Jamalpur

An eight year old girl was found dead after drowning in the flood water in Jamalapur’s on Monday, June 20,2022 Focus BanglaThe flood situation in the district further deteriorated following the continuous rise in the water level of the Jamuna yesterday.

Water Development Board sources said during the last 24 hours the water level in the river Jamuna rose by 21 cm and was flowing 49 cm above the red mark at Bahadurabad ghat point till 3pm.

District Primary Education Officer Abdul Razzak said flood water entered 112 institutions and classes in 65 schools have been suspended.

Deputy Director (In-charge) of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Zakia Sultana said with the rise of floodwaters more standing crops on 2,738 hectares of land were submerged and floodwaters submerged T-Aman seed beds on 32 hectares, Aush on 345 hectares, jute on 2146 hectares, vegetables on 178 hectares and green chillies on 37 hectares of land in the district.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said 3,811 flood affected people took shelter in two flood shelters in Islampur and Dewanganj upazila.

Upazila administrations disbursed four tonnes of rice and Taka one lakh cash among the flood victims in the two upazilas.

Meanwhile, an eight-year-old girl was found dead after drowning in floodwaters in Jamalpur’s Islampur yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Arifa, daughter of Alam Miah, a resident of West Bamna Ghonapara village.

Abdus Salam, chairman of Chinaduli Union Parishad of Islampur upazila, confirmed the matter.

4 villages in Feni inundated as dam collapses

The dam in the Muhuri River of Fulgazi Sadar Union under the upazila collapsed yesterday morning.

According to local people and Water Development Board sources, a portion of the dam collapsed due to heavy rains and an onrush of hilly water. Vast areas of North Daulatpur, South Daulatpur, Ghaniyamora and Bairagpur of Fulgazi Sadar union were flooded.

Ashrafur Nahar, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Fulgazi, said four villages in Sadar union were flooded following the collapse of the embankment in Muhuri river.

Long queue of vehicles on Daulatdia ferry route

Ferry services on the Daulatdia route are being disrupted due to strong current in the Padma. As a result, there was a long queue of vehicles on Daulatdia zero point to Padma intersection of the Dhaka-Khulna Highway yesterday. 

Local people said that hundreds of trucks carrying perishable goods alongside passenger buses were stranded in the queue. 

Officials said that the monsoon season has caused the water level in the Padma to rise. There are strong currents in the Padma as it is a fast-flowing river. The ferry's drivers are struggling to keep the ferry running despite the strong current.
