Minister: Investigating whether depot fire was sabotage

Information and Broadcasting minister Hasan Mahmud alleges that a vested quarter has been trying to foil the joy of Padma Bridge

It is being investigated whether the fire at Chittagong’s Sitakundo is a ploy to sabotage the joy of the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, says Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud.

“We are looking into it to see whether it was indeed an accident or an attempt to foil the country’s image and export business,” he said on Monday.

He made the remarks while speaking to the media after visiting the burn victims at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

“You all know that ever since the inauguration date of the Padma Bridge was announced, there has been an attempt to create anarchy within the country,” he said.

Responding to queries on some media reports that the BM Container Depot belonged to an Awami League leader, he said: “I looked into it. Awami League leader Mujibur Rahman only has a 5% share there.”

He said that saying that the depot belonged to Mujibur is an example of false journalism.

The minister said that the civil administration, medical colleges and private hospitals rose to the treatment of the victims at the directive of the prime minister.

He added that ruling party leaders and activists came forward to help with the rescue operations as well.
