The 51st death anniversary of martyred intellectual Mohsin Ali Dewan will be observed today in a befitting manner.
The Pakistani occupation forces, in association with Jamaat-e-Islami operatives and razakars, had killed Dewan on June 3, 1971 after picking him up from his Bogra residence, a media statement said yesterday.
Mohsin was serving as the principal of Sherpur Degree College and the editor of the Saptahik Uttarbanga Bulletin during the 1971 Liberation War.
He had started his career in journalism with the then Ittehad and Insaf daily newspapers. Later, he joined Bogra Azizul Haque Degree College as the Bangla department head, after working at Naogaon Degree College as a teacher.
The founding president of Bogra Press Club, Mohsin had started the publications of literature weekly “Otoeb” and the Bangladesh’s first evening daily Janamat.
He also played a pivotal role in establishing Bogra Law College, Shah Sultan College and Joypurha College.
To commemorate his sacrifice, Bangladesh Post Office had released a postage stamp, while the government named a road after him in Bogra in his memory.
Non-government organization TMSS has also introduced the “Shaheed Mohsin Ali Dewan Award” on journalism.
