Some Biman employees are undoubtedly involved in gold smuggling, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mahbub Ali has said.
Some also had ties to Abdul Ahad, the employee detained and suspended on Wednesday, the state minister said after visiting the Biman Flight Catering Center (BFCC) on Thursday.
He said a committee had been formed to probe into the issue.
The state minister warned that no one involved would be spared.
Such incidents had been reported by other airlines as well, and action will be taken so that these incidents were not repeated, he said.
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry Secretary Mokammel Hossain said a syndicate working from abroad was involved in the smuggling.
“We will visit those countries to seek help to identify the syndicate, so that we can stop them,” he said.
On February 13, another Biman official, BFCC assistant manager (operation) Mamunur Rashid, found to have been involved in gold smuggling, was fired with 90 days’ salary.
However, no legal action was taken against him.
Industry insiders allege that the Biman authorities protect its dishonest officials.
