Farmers already suffered heavy losses due to the heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Asani in the Bay of Bengal.
Now the Met Office has forecast heavy rainfall in the northern region including Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions due to the depression in the south Bay.
Moreover, light to medium rain accompanied by thunder and stormy winds in the rest of the country including Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Chittagong divisions is also likely.
The forecast has left farmers in fear as most of their paddy is still underwater due to the heavy rainfall a few days ago.
Bangla Tribune’s Kurigram correspondent reported that the incessant rain has caused the Madaidanga Bil in Roumari Upazila to overflow.
Thousands of farmers, hoping to harvest paddy over thousands of hectres of land are now in a tight spot.
With crops underwater with no proper drainage system, they are now calling on the government and concerned bodies to ensure a sustainable drainage system.
The scenario is identical in all the places where paddy is being harvested.
“It is truly concerning. All the paddy is underwater, especially the ones on low-lying land,” agricultural expert Dr Mizanur Rahman told Bangla Tribune.
“Under these circumstances, it will be extremely difficult for farmers to harvest the paddy. But what we fear most is the heavy monsoon after May,” he said, adding that harvesting the crops have become imperative.
Meanwhile, the maritime ports have been asked to hoist danger signal no-1.
On the other hand, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has warned that the water in the rivers of Sylhet and Sunamganj district is likely to cross danger levels at some point in the next 24 hours.
Moreover, the water level at Bramhaputra, Jamuna, and Padma will also continue to rise in the 72 hours.
Water levels at Teesta and Dharla in the northern region will also rise over the next 24 hours.
In the next 48 hours, the Meghna, Surma, Kushiara, Bhogai-Kangsa, Dhanu-Baulai, Manu, and Khoai rivers will also rise.
The government agency for flood forecasting also said that the water level at Shari-Goyain River is flowing five centimetres above the danger level.
The water level at Kushiara’s Amalshid level is 96cm above the danger level and at Surma’s Kanaighat is above 122 centimetres.
