Many countries including the US have learnt from Bangladesh's action plans on environment, says the minister

Those who are damaging the environment for personal interests are enemies of the country and the people, Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud has said.

"United resistance should be built against environment polluters," he said on Friday while attending a seminar arranged by AL sub-committee on forest and environment at the Cirdap auditorium in the capital.

"Those who are damaging the environment for personal interests and those industrialists don't keep the matter of environmental pollution in mind," said Hasan, also the information and broadcasting minister.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (a global partnership of countries that are disproportionately affected by the consequences of climate change), always played an active role in the world to this end, he added.

Hasan said Bangladesh played a pioneering role in formulating strategy and action plans in facing the impacts of climate change. Many countries including the United States have learnt from Bangladesh's action plans.

For these reasons, Bangabandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won the Champions of the Earth Award, he mentioned.

Noting the significance of observing Earth Day, Dr Hasan said if the earth becomes unlivable, other news will lose importance.

He deplored that most of the newspapers did not publish news on the occasion of the Earth Day on Friday, and television channels also did not air adequate programs.

The minister thanked AL's sub-committee on forest and environment for arranging a program on this day.
