E-passport: Sufferings mount as online services remain halted

Officials hope that the service can be brought back to normal from Tuesday

Update : 21 Mar 2022, 09:26 PM

Many service seekers are suffering for failing to apply for e-passports via online due to an up-gradation of the website.

On Monday, hundreds of passport seekers gathered in front of the Agargaon passport office inquiring about the application procedure as the website is now under maintenance.

Officials of the Department of Immigration and Passport (DIP) assured them that the online services would become normal from Tuesday.

On March 14, the DIP in a statement said that e-passport activities would remain closed on March 15 and 16 at the departmental and regional passport offices of the country due to OAT and failover tests conducted at the Disaster Recovery Site (DRS).

The statement further said that the applicants who had made an appointment for e-passports on March 15 and 16 would be able to complete the application process at the designated office any time after March 20.

The e-passport service was introduced in January, 2020.

The e-passports add a layer of security to traditional non-electronic passports by embedding an electronic chip in the passport booklet that stores the biographical information visible on page-2 of the passport, as well as a digital security feature.
