Students of seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University took to the streets on Sunday demanding retake of exams after “unusual number of fails” in the fourth year examinations of the 2015-16 session.
Hundreds of students blocked the Nilkhet intersection from 11am on Sunday causing severe traffic congestion on the Azimpur-Mirpur road.
Following four hours of protests, they left the streets being assured by the authorities of holding a special exam.
The students had warned of tougher movement if the DU authorities failed to announce the date of the fresh examination within two days.
A five-member delegation of the protesters met with the coordinator of seven colleges, who is also the principal of Dhaka College, Professor IK Selim Ullah Khondaker, and got assurance about the special examination.

Imran Hossain, a student of Government Titumir College, and a member of the delegation, said: “The coordinator has assured us about holding a special examination. He said that he would discuss the exams with the respective department chairmen [where unusual fails occurred]. We have given him two days for this.”
Prof IK Selim Ullah said: “They have demanded a special examination, and we have no objection to this. Special tests must be taken, and it is under consideration. But we will take the exam following a procedure. It is not possible to maintain a timeframe issued by the students."
Students said that the results of eight to nine departments under seven colleges were published in the last few months, and it was “disastrous”.
Maximum number of students of the seven colleges could not pass the English exams.
As many as 193 out of 241 candidates of Titumir College, 175 out of 210 of Eden Mohila College, 92 out of 116 candidates of Government Bangla College and 30 out of 45 candidates of Badrunnesa Mohila College have been given failing grades in English.
