Freedom fighter, ex-CU dean Salahuddin succumbs to Covid

He tested positive for Covid-19 on July 21

Prof Gazi Salahuddin Ahmed, a freedom fighter and a former dean of the Social Sciences Faculty of Chittagong University (CU), has died of Covid-19 at a hospital in Dhaka. He was 78.

He tested positive for Covid-19 on July 21 and was admitted to the ZH Sikder Women's Medical College and Hospital with breathing problems on July 31, said his son Tanvir Salehin Gazi.

However, he passed away around 8pm Friday while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.

Prof Salahuddin, also a former secretary of the CU Teachers' Association, was born on September 28, 1949, in Badarpur village of Sonaimuri upazila, Noakhali.

The 1971 war veteran was originally a resident of the Pahartoli area in Chittagong city. He played a vital role in the different movements there.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed deep shock at the death of Prof Salahuddin and prayed for the eternal salvation of his departed soul.

She also extended deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.

CU Vice-Chancellor Prof Shirin Akhter and its Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Benu Kumar Dey also mourned Prof Salahuddin's death.
