Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Friday said unchecked movement of people is largely responsible for the rapid rise of Covid-19 in the country.
“The Indian [coronavirus] variant has been found in Bangladesh … We have already asked officials concerned to take necessary measures to stop the spread of coronavirus,” he said in a meeting at his residence in Manikganj.
The meeting was attended, among others, by Manikganj Sadar Awami League President Israfil Hossain, General Secretary Afsar uddin Sarker, Baliati UP Chairman Ruhul Amin, Dhankora UP Chairman Abdur Rouf, Saturia UP Chairman Anwar Hossain Pintu and Tilli UP Chairman Morsalin Babu.

Referring to the devastating Covid-19 situation in India, Maleque said a large number of people in India is dying every day after contracting the new variant of the lethal virus.
Maleque said the Covid-19 infection rate has been rising sharply in different border districts and it may spread to other parts of the country including Dhaka city.
He urged the people of the country to follow health rules to protect themselves from the deadly disease.
“Discussion with Russia for purchasing their vaccine has progressed a lot,” the minister said.
Maleque said Bangladesh has signed an agreement with China to buy Covid-19 vaccines. “The agreement was signed with China to purchase Covid-19 vaccines … we expecting that China will take necessary initiatives to provide coronavirus vaccines very soon,” he added.
