PM Hasina: Law to be introduced to ensure job security for journalists

The prime minister also assured that dearness allowance would be provided to all journalists of the country

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that a new law would be introduced to ensure job security for journalists. 

She told parliament that the measure was being taken as journalists from both print and electronic media were facing uncertainty regarding their jobs, which was a threat for a free media.

The prime minister was responding to a tabled question from Awami League MP Shahiduzzaman Sarker of Naogaon-2 on Wednesday. 

The prime minister also informed the House that to remove job insecurity for journalists, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry was formulating a law, which was at the final stage of approval.

The premier informed parliament that her government had taken a decision to provide dearness allowance, which would be 45% of their salaries, to all print media workers of the country.

In the first wave of the coronavirus last year, some 3,350 journalists from all over the country were given Tk10,000 each by the government.

The government would provide financial assistance of Tk10,000 each to 2,000 more journalists badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Dr Md Hasan Mahmud had said on April 25.
