It is suspected that the dolphins died after being trapped in fishing nets

Update : 11 May 2021, 06:04 PM

Two dolphins were found dead on Kuakata beach on Sunday and Monday.

Locals said the bodies of two dolphins, about 10 feet in length, were found lying on the beach.

One dead dolphin was found near Lebur Ban on Sunday and the other in Gangamoti sea beach on Monday morning.

Municipality officials and local Fisheries and Livestock officers rushed to the spot upon being informed of the matter. They spotted injury marks on the bodies of the dolphins.

It is suspected that the dolphins died after being trapped in fishing nets.

Molla Emdadullah, Patuakhali District fisheries officer, said a team was sent to the spot and they are trying to conduct autopsies of the dolphins to discern the actual cause of death.

Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division officials said the dolphins, locally known as ‘Utom’ or ‘Susuk’, are found in fresh water. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUDN) has already placed it on the red list as it is a rare species on the verge of extinction.

In 2010, the government announced a sanctuary for fish from Nazirhat to Kalurghat in Chittagong.
