Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has inaugurated the first Bangladeshi-owned university in the United States.

He said the commencement of Innovative Global University, or IGlobal University, marked the beginning of another chapter in the history of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence.

“Apart from turning the immigrant dreams into a reality in this multinational society, its exclusive curriculum will hopefully land talented Bangladeshi students white-collar jobs,” he added.

Following proper health and safety regulations, the inauguration program took place in the Virginia-based university’s auditorium on February 27.

Bangladesh Ambassador to the US HEM Shahidul Islam, Vice-Chairman of Summit Group Farid Khan, Chief of Bangla Department on Voice of America Roquia Haider, along with teachers, directors, and students were present during the inauguration program.

Moreover, UGC member Prof Dr Sazzad Hossain, Georgia State Senator Sheikh Rahman, and Dr Nina Ahmed, ex-adviser to Barack Obama sent their video greetings.

In his welcome speech, IGlobal University Chairman and CEO Engr Abubokor Hanip said: “Students will receive industry skill development training in addition to academic education in their bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

“The combination of these two streams of learning boosts their chance of securing a bright job at the end of graduation.

“The university already earned a stunning reputation in information technology, business administration, project, and health care management when it first started in 2008 but later its ownership changed. From this year on, its ownership and overall management rest upon us,” he added.

“We will particularly attend to the needs of Bangladeshi students so that they get admitted here in greater numbers,” said Hanip.

He announced two scholarships after the name of Foreign Minister Dr Momen for bachelor’s and master’s level Bangladeshi students. The scholarship covers about 75% of the total cost. In addition, another $200,000 scholarship fund finances Bangladeshi learners in this school every year.
