Namaz-e-Janaza of Luna Shamsuddoha on Friday

A tech entrepreneur, Luna was the first woman to head the board of any state-owned bank in Bangladesh

The namaz-e-janaza of Luna Shamsuddoha, former Janata Bank chairman and a leading IT entrepreneur, will be held on Friday.

It will be held after the Jummah prayers at Dhaka’s Gulshan Society Jame Masjid.

Luna had been suffering from cancer and undergoing treatment at a Singapore hospital where she breathed her last on Wednesday.

According to family sources, her body will be flown back to Dhaka by Friday morning. 

Luna Shamsuddoha was also the founder and chairman of the software firm Dohatec New Media, a director of Agrani Bank Limited, a board member of the SME Foundation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) and Underprivileged Children’s Educational Programs (UCEP) Bangladesh.

She was also a member of Council Global Thought Leaders on Inclusive Growth, Global Advisory Council, and Strategic Partner of Thinkthrough Consulting (TTC) India.

She was awarded the Bangladesh Business Award in 2017 for her massive contribution to Bangladesh’s economy and was also awarded the Anannya Top Ten Awards for her involvement in the software industry.

She is also well renowned in several global forums concerning technology, e-governance, and women’s economic participation and empowerment. 

Luna was the first woman in Bangladesh to become the chairperson of any state-run bank in the country.

Zunaid Ahmed Palak, the state minister for information and communication technology, also expressed his condolences over her demise.

“She worked tirelessly as a dedicated person to form a digital Bangladesh from the very beginning. She had an important role in developing the government's e-GP system and many other projects,” he said in a Facebook post.

Luna Shamsuddoha left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire more women to break barriers and take on leadership roles in the technology and business industries.

Different business and IT organizations of the country prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Describing Luna’s husband AKM Shamsuddoha as a close friend, Beximco Group, one of the biggest industrial conglomerates in Bangladesh, expressed its condolence over her death.

Luna’s daughter Reem Shamsuddoha serves as a director of Bangladesh Export Import Co Ltd and Beximco Pharmaceuticals.

“She [Luna] was a kind and generous person who never hesitated in assisting those in need. She left an indelible mark of warmth and friendship on whoever she came in contact with. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends the world over,” read a statement by Beximco Group Chairman ASF Rahman, Vice Chairman Salman F Rahman, Advisor to its board Shayan F Rahman.
