A man has been killed in a clash between the supporters of two councillor candidates during the Patiya municipality polls in Chittagong.

The clash took place in front of Dakshin Gobindarkhil Government Primary School centre under Ward 8 of the municipality on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased is Abdul Mabud, 50, younger brother of councillor aspirant Abdul Mannan.

Patiya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rezaul Karim Majumder said supporters of councillor candidates -- Sarwar Kamal and Mannan -- locked into a clash in front of the polling centre around 12:30pm.

Mabud was stabbed during the clash and rushed to Patiya Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty physician declared him dead, the OC said.

Police have brought the situation under control in the polling area, he added.

Balloting at 55 municipalities in the fourth phase elections is underway with participation of political parties in the mayoral race of the local bodies.

The voting started at 8am on Sunday and will continue until 4pm without any break.
