Instead of using the internal lift for work, they used the external one, which is only allowed to carry goods or bags, not people

Update : 03 Feb 2021, 07:49 PM

Two workers boarded an overloaded elevator with 50kg/six bags of chicken feed, when the wire snapped and they plummeted to their death from the sixth floor of a farm in Shahjahanpur, Bogra.

The accident took place at Tamim Agro Industries Ltd in Shajapur area of Shahjahanpur upazila in Bogra on Wednesday morning.

Police recovered two bodies and sent them to the morgue for inspection, Shahjahanpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed.

The deceased were identified as Rashidul Islam, 18, of Buriban village under Boda upazila of Panchagarh, and Narayan Chandra, 22, of Kamarbania village under the same upazila.

Factory workers said they store animal food in a poultry farm on the seventh floor of the building using an external elevator. Workers usually use the internal elevator to reach there.

Alamgir Hossain, floor in-charge of the company's poultry farm, said the two deceased workers, Rashidul Islam and Narayan Chandra, were going to the seventh floor to feed the chickens around 6am on Wednesday.

Instead of using the internal lift, they used the external one which is only allowed to carry goods and bags.

“As soon as they reached the sixth floor, the lift cable broke due to the overload and they fell to the ground, getting seriously injured.”

Other factory workers rescued them from the scene and sent them to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for medical attention, where doctors pronounced them dead, police said.

Shajahanpur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdur Razzak said: “Investigations will start once the workers’ family members file a case regarding this accident. Legal action will be taken after the investigation.”
