Rudrapur lies in the northern district of Dinajpur in the most densely populated country on earth, Bangladesh. Poverty and the lack of an infrastructure drive many people from the countryside into the cities. The METI school project, designed by architect Anna Heringer, aims to give the rural population perspectives and to help people learn about the value of the village in all its complexity. According to Heringer, the philosophy of the school is to “learn with joy.” This special school concept attempts to instill in the children self-confidence and independence with the aim of strengthening their sense of identity. The school complex also houses a hospital for autistic children and a vocational training centre.
