The bomb disposal unit destroyed the crude bombs in controlled explosions

Update : 20 Nov 2020, 11:02 PM

Police have seized as many as 31 crude bombs from an under-construction building in Dhaka’Uttara.

A bomb disposal unit was working at the house under Sector-10 of Uttara as of the filing of this report at 8.54pm on Friday.

Several teams of the Detective Branch (DB) and Uttara West police station cordoned off the building around 4.30pm on Friday.

Later, the bomb disposal unit recovered 31 crude bombs from the building, which were later destroyed in controlled explosions.

Earlier on November 12, multiple crude bombs exploded in Uttara when the by-polls to Dhaka 18 constituency was underway.

Bombs connected to arson attacks on by-polls day?

Police have arrested two Jubo Dal (the youth wing of BNP) leaders identified as Mamun and Sumon over the explosions on the day of voting, DB Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akhter told reporters at the scene.

Information gleaned from them led to the recovery of the bombs, he added.

DB’s Uttara Division Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shafiqul Alam said the bombs used during the November 12 arson attack on buses at several locations in Dhaka city were supplied from this house.

Shafiqul said they were trying to track down the sources of the bombs.

Meanwhile, the BNP has claimed that the cases filed over the incident and bomb recoveries have been fabricated to falsely implicate its leaders.

Its Office Secretary Emran Saleh Prince said Mamun and one of his colleagues were missing since Wednesday, when they secured bail from the High Court in cases filed over the arson attacks on buses.

He suspected police might have picked up Mamun and then staged the bomb recovery incident.

Since November 12, at least 16 cases have been filed over arson attacks on buses, vandalism and exploding crude bombs in which over 50 BNP leaders and activists were arrested. Over a thousand activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations have been prosecuted in the cases filed with 12 police stations.
