A Dhaka court has sent Daily Sangram Chief Reporter Ruhul Amin Gazi, also the president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalist (BFUJ), to jail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debdash Chandra Adhikary passed the order on Thursday after rejecting his bail petition in the case, reports Bangla Tribune.

Rabindra Chandra Ray, the general recording officer’s (GRO) assistant from Hatirjheel police station, said: “He [Ruhul Amin Gazi] was on an arrest warrant in a case with Hatirjheel police station. He was produced before the court in the case on Thursday. After a hearing, he was ordered to be sent to jail.”

Earlier, Ruhul Amin Gazi was arrested from the Daily Sangram office on Wednesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Walid Hossain said a court warrant was issued against Ruhul Amin Gazi. Police had carried out the warrant order.

Last year, Daily Sangram Editor Abul Asad and Chief Reporter Ruhul Amin Gazi were accused in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA) on charges of circulating provocative reports. Asad, however, secured bail for a year from the High Court on September 23 this year.

On December 13 last year, police had detained Asad as his newspaper described Abdul Quader Mollah, an executed 1971 war criminal, as a “martyr” in a report published on December 12.

He was later shown arrested in the DSA case filed at Hatirjheel police station by Ward 36 Muktijoddha Sangsad Commander Afzal Hossain.

Muktijuddho Mancha leaders and activists had also vandalized the office of Sangram, a Jamaat-e-Islami mouthpiece following that report's publication.

A journalist associated with Daily Sangram said Ruhul Amin Gazi was out on bail in the sedition case. But the court recently cancelled the bail and issued a warrant. Gazi was not aware of this development.
