A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has fined the Advanced Chemical Industries (ACI) Ltd for using harmful methanol, which can cause death, in their Savlon-branded hand sanitizers.

Acting on a tip-off, Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam conducted the operation on Sunday afternoon at an ACI depot in Mirpur area of Dhaka, where all the hand sanitizers present were destroyed on the spot.

The mobile court also ordered the company officials to remove all the Savlon hand sanitizers from the markets in the next 48 hours.

“We had recently seized and destroyed a huge lot of hand sanitizers from ACI’s Gazipur factory, as they contained methanol in them,” said Sarwoer.

After receiving information that more batches were available in their Mirpur depot, the mobile court raided it and found the presence of methanol in several batches of the sanitizer.

Hand sanitizers used to prevent Covid-19 are made by mixing a certain amount of hydrogen peroxide with ethanol, glycerine and cold boiling water or isopropyl alcohol (propanol) with various ingredients including hydrogen peroxide and glycerine, he said.

But if ethanol is replaced with methanol, that becomes fatal. A person can suffer from headache, vomiting, blindness, loss of consciousness, and even go into coma, the magistrate added.
