Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Thursday said 15-storey cancer hospitals will be built in eight divisions of the country by 2022 in an effort to improve overall health system against the killer disease.

“Alongside cancer treatments, sufficient healthcare facilities also will be available for heart and kidney patients in these hospitals,” he told a meeting at his ministry here, an official release said.

Senior officials of the ministry, heads of relevant departments and physicians, among others, were present at the meeting.

The minister said that 300 beds will be set up for each unit of cancer, kidney and cardiovascular and all modern treatment facilities would be ensured in the eight cancer hospitals.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide. Almost three quarters of all NCD deaths, and 82% of the 16 million people who died prematurely, or before reaching 70 years of age, occur in low- and middle-income countries.
