Kuwait public prosecution continues to investigate the case of Laxmipur lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Papul, the gulf nation’s media reported.

According to Al-Seyassah daily, the prosecution on Wednesday listened to the testimony of a former Kuwaiti lawmaker who is a suspect in the case but decided to release him on personal guarantee. The prosecution also listened to the testimony of a well-known businessman in his capacity as a witness.

Informed sources told the daily, the interrogations with the former lawmaker continued for nearly four hours non-stop, as the public prosecution charged him with bribery and helping to complete illegal transactions of the company owned by Papul in partnership with a Kuwaiti, but the accused is said to have denied in detail the accusations.

The sources added that the prosecution is waiting for the Kuwaiti parliament to lift the immunity of the two lawmakers to listen to their testimonies and based on the investigations with them they will be dealt with accordingly.

On July 13, public prosecution has revealed that two lawmakers were involved in Papul’s human trafficking and money laundering activities.

Saadoun Hammad Al-Otaibi and Salah Abdulredha Khurshid, two members of Kuwait parliament, even used to take bribes from Papul.

Papul, an independent member of parliament elected from Lakshmipur 2 constituency, made the revelation during interrogations by the Kuwaiti authorities, reports Kuwait’s English-language daily Arab Times.

Kuwait also suspended a major general in connection with his alleged link with human trafficking and the visa trading business of Papul.

Papul was arrested by Kuwait authorities on June 7 in Kuwait City on charges of human trafficking and money laundering.

According to Al Qabas, Papul is a member of a three-man racket whose other members include another Bangladeshi MP, whose wife is also an MP from the seats reserved for women.

It added that the trio occupied sensitive positions in three major companies that brought over 20,000 Bangladeshi workers into Kuwait in exchange for large sums of money believed to be in excess of 50 million dinars.
