A disabled child has been found dead, a day after he was kidnapped for ransom, in Gazipur.
The body of the deceased, Fahim, 7, was found inside a plastic bag, dumped in a bush in an abandoned area not far from his home on Tuesday.
The victim is the son of Kamrul Islam of the district.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gazipur Metropolitan (GMP) Basan police station Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident.
Kamrul Islam, the victim's father hailing from Shurmukhya village under Atpara police station of Netrokona, said he and his family lived in a rented house at Naljani Madhyapara area under Gazipur City Corporation. He and his wife work at a local garment factory, generally leaving their 7-year-old disabled son at home.
Kamrul and his wife came home during their lunch break on Monday to find that Fahim was missing. They were unable to find him despite their best efforts.
Later, on Monday night, unidentified men called them over the phone to demand a ransom of Tk50,000 for Fahim's return, threatening to kill him if they were not paid.
Fearing for the safety of his child, Kamrul immediately sent them Tk2,000 over Bkash. But the kidnappers refused to release Fahim unless the full amount was paid.
Eventually, around midnight, Kamrul decided to inform the police about the incident.
Around sunset the following day, Fahim’s dead body was found inside a plastic bag, dumped in a nearby bush.
Primary post mortem indicates that he was killed by suffocation.
No arrests have been made in connection to the case thus far.
