President Abdul Hamid has accepted the resignation letter of Prof Abul Kalam Azad, chief of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
A highly placed source at Bangabhaban, the official residence of the president, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
On condition of anonymity, the Bangabhaban official said the president accepted the resignation letter at around 3pm.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, some officials of the Ministry of Public Administration hinted that Dr Azad’s resignation letter would be accepted after the supreme authority’s nod.
“The government has started the process of accepting the resignation letter of Prof Abul Kalam Azad,” Public Administration Secretary Sheikh Yusuf Harun told reporters on Wednesday morning.
Dr Azad sent his resignation letter to the Ministry of Public Administration on Tuesday, in the face of criticism due to various inconsistencies in the overall management of Covid-19 in the country.
His resignation has come amid controversies and heavy criticism of the lack of coordination between the Health Ministry and the DGHS in efficiently dealing with the pandemic.
