Journalist Mozammel Haque 'Geduchacha' laid to rest in Feni

In the 1980s, during the regime of General HM Ershad, Mozammel Haque attained huge fame by penning columns in the weekly Sugandha under the title ‘Gedu Chachar Khola Chithi’

Journalist and freedom fighter Khandaker Mozammel Haque, who used to write columns under the pen name Geduchacha, has been buried with state honours at his family graveyard in Feni.

He passed away at the age of 71 while undergoing treatment at a Badda hospital.

“He was buried with full state honor at his family graveyard in Feni following two namaz-e-janazas. Health guidelines were maintained," said Chattogram Division Journalists’ Association, Dhaka Secretary General Shahin-ul-Islam, reports BSS.

Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) President Quddus Afrad said: “Mozammel Haque breathed his last at a private hospital in Badda around 4pm. He had been undergoing treatment at the hospital’s ICU since June 27 and had shown symptoms of Covid-19.”

Mozammel, who was also an executive body member of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), is survived by wife, two daughters, and three sons.

His body was taken to his village home in Feni following a namaz-e-janaza in front of his Segunbagicha residence at 9am on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a condolence message, expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Haque who was the editor of the weekly Surjadoy, and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Information Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud also mourned the death of Haque who also edited another weekly named Ajker Surjadoy.

In a condolence message, he recalled the life and work of Haque, praying for eternal peace of his departed soul.

In that column, he portrayed different problems and crisis of the society, gave suggestions what to do to overcome those obstacles, and criticized the then government.

Haque was serving as the president of Chittagong division journalists’ association and an adviser of Feni Journalists’ Forum (Dhaka).
