People do not have to come to the police, but the police will go to people.
Bangladesh Police Inspector General (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has instructed to take the police service to people’s doorsteps, unlike the traditional practice of people having to go to police stations for any service.
The IGP gave the instructions while addressing a video conference from the police headquarters, along with senior officials of various units including Metropolitan police, Range police, Rapid Action Battalion, Police Bureau of Investigation on Sunday evening.
He also said that each union in our country will be identified as a beat and a police officer will be assigned as in charge of each beat. He will regularly inquire about things like opportunities, problems of the people of that union, will keep in touch with them on a regular basis, and will know their views.
This will help the police to promptly solve their problems and provide the desired service.
In this context, mentioning the success of beat policing in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet, the IGP said, beat policing has been successful in these areas.
“We want to introduce beat policing all over the country, we want to reach out to people, and we want to win people's hearts,” he added.
Referring to the police service during the current pandemic situation, the IGP also said: “People did not have to come to us during the coronavirus period. We have gone to the people, we have stood by them, we have infected ourselves, and we have lost our lives to protect them from the coronavirus infection.
“Many things were not our responsibility, but we did it out of a sense of human responsibility.”
Mentioning that the prime minister and the people of the country have congratulated police for this impeccable role, the IGP Benazir said: “One day there will be no coronavirus, but we must continue our efforts to maintain the trust and love of the people."
“All must work together for the welfare of the country and the people.”
The IGP recalled with deep respect the police personnel who sacrificed their lives to protect the people from the coronavirus infection. He wishes peace to their disembodied souls. He also wishes speedy recovery to those who are ill.
He also said. “The police must be drug free if they want to be on people’s side. No police members will take drugs, will not trade in drugs, and will not have any connection with drug dealers. We all need to work together to build Bangladesh as a drug-free country.”
The IGP said, “No police member can earn any money illegally. If someone wants to be rich by being involved in corruption, let him quit his job, do business and become rich, we will applaud him. However, the police cannot be associated with corruption in any way.”
Benazir said: “The overall welfare of the police officers and the force would also be ensured. We want to ensure that their children get education, medical treatment and other facilities so that they can provide maximum service to the people without any hindrance.”
