Covid-19: Bangladesh records highest death toll, new cases in 24hrs

Total number of cases climbs to 94,481

Bangladesh has recorded 53 deaths in the last 24 hours from the deadly Covid-19 infection, the highest number of deaths recorded in the country in a single day, till date.

With the new deaths, the total death toll in the country from the pandemic now stands at 1,262.

At the same time, the country also recorded the highest 3,862 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of identified cases to 94,481.

DGHS Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 pandemic on Tuesday.

In the last 24 hours, she also added that 61 laboratories across the country tested 17,214 samples, of which 22.44% were found positive.

Meanwhile, 2,237 patients successfully recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recovered patients in the country to 36,264.

The daily briefing also mentioned that the rate of recovery from Covid-19 in Bangladesh currently stands at 38.37% while the mortality rate was 1.34%.

Among the deceased, 47 were male and six were female, said Dr Nasima.

Of them, 30 patients died in Dhaka division, 14 in Chittagong division, four in Rajshahi division, three in Khulna division, one in Barisal division and another died in Mymensingh division.

“Thirty-four people died in hospitals across the country, 18 died at home, and another was declared dead upon arrival at hospital,” she added.

Besides, 635 more people were taken to isolation in the last 24 hours, while 359 were released and currently 10,302 people are in isolation.

During the same period, another 3,421 people were home and institutionally quarantined and 2,544 were released. At present. 62,546 people are quarantined across the country.

Bangladesh confirmed its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18 but it has been seeing a sharp rise in both new cases and deaths in recent weeks.

The country crossed the 90,000 mark by registering 90,619 cases on Monday.

In an effort to prevent transmission of coronavirus, the government has issued some directives imposing restrictions on the movement of people.

The Cabinet Division on Monday issued the directives which will remain in force until June 30. Weekly holidays will be included in the directives, reports UNB.

According to the directives, all government offices, non-government, autonomous, private offices and their employees and staffers under “red zone” areas will be under general holidays and the Public Administration Ministry will take necessary measures in this regard.

The life and livelihood, movement of people in red, yellow ,and green zones, under Bangladesh Risk Zone-Based Covid-19 Containments Implementation Strategy Guide, provided by health authorities will be strictly maintained.

Already the government has marked 17 areas under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), and 28 areas under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), 11 areas in Chittagong, Sadar, Rupganj and Araihazar upazilas of Narayanganj, Narsingdi Model and Madhabdi thanas, Palash upazila in Narsingdi district and all upazilas of Gazipur district to be declared as red zones.

No one will be allowed to go out of his/her home from 8pm till 6am without emergency work, which includes emergency purchasing, work place, medicine purchasing, treatment, and burial process.

People will have to maintain health directives when going out for emergency work or they would face legal action.
