Police officials have helped a pregnant woman reach the hospital for delivery as she could not manage an ambulance due to being Covid-19 positive.

She gave birth to a baby boy at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Monday afternoon.

Her family had sought earlier, on May 6, help from police as they failed to manage a vehicle for her after she started showing Covid-19 symptoms.

The next day, with the help of police and using their vehicle, the family visited different hospitals in the capital and but failed to get her admitted in any of them.

Finally, police took her to DMCH, where she tested positive for Covid-19. She returned home afterwards and stayed in self-isolation.

On Monday morning, the family sought police's help again after the woman went into labour. Police helped take her to DMCH where she gave birth.

“We successfully manage everything. We dressed her up in personal protective equipment and female police members were taken in case she delivers inside the police car,” said Bangshal police station Officer-In-Charge (OC) Shaheen Fakir told Dhaka Tribune.

“We got her tested for Covid-19 on May 7 at DMCH and doctors then told her to get admitted to the hospital,” he added.

“The doctor then estimated the date of her delivery on 16th or 17th of this month,” he added.

“But the woman refused to do so as the result for the test was yet to come and opted for self-isolation. We then took her back to her home at Dhaka’s Koshaituli area.”

OC Shaheen also said the baby boy is in good health, but the woman is yet to recover from the illness.

“Though she was taken to the operation theatre, she had a normal delivery,” he added.
