Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Bangladesh is ready to meet international orders for readymade garment (RMG) products of global buyers despite the coronavirus outbreak.

The Premier was speaking over phone to Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven on Wednesday afternoon.

Ehsanul Karim, press secretary to the Prime Minister, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said, “The Swedish prime minister called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at around 2 pm and exchanged greetings with her.”

During the 15-minute conversation, the two Premiers discussed trade and business issues, particularly in the context of the RMG sector, he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told her Swedish counterpart: “We are hopeful that Bangladesh can meet the orders for RMG products from international buyers, including Sweden, despite the present situation caused by the Covid-19 outbreak.”

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, in response, assured the Bangladesh leader that his country would not cancel any orders placed in the readymade garments sector of Bangladesh.

The export-oriented garment factories have been opened through keeping compliance with all health regulations, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina replied.

On April 12, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said buyers had cancelled orders worth $3.15 billion in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The coronavirus has infected 7,103 people and killed 163 people so far in Bangladesh.

The fast spreading coronavirus, which was first reported in China’s Wuhan, has claimed more than 218,170 lives and infected more than 3,146,650 people globally, according to Worldometer.

As many as 961,833 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 210 countries and territories across the planet.
