One person has died after a clash broke out between supporters of two councilor candidates of the upcoming Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls.
Confirming the matter on Thursday, Pahartali police station Officer-in-Charge Mainur Rahman said the victim was Md Tanvir Ahmed, 45.
The police said the clash ensued between supporters of ruling Awami League-backed councilor candidate Md Ismail and rebel councilor candidate Morshed Akhter Chowdhury at Uttar Kattali area of the city on Wednesday night.
According to the police, Tanvir along with others were working at an electoral camp of Morshed Akhter Chowdhury, when a group of people, reportedly supporters of Md Ismail, entered the camp and had an altercation with them.
At one point, they stabbed Tanvir with a sharp weapon. He died on his way to the hospital.
However, none of the two councilor candidates – Md Ismail and Morshed Akhter Chowdhury – were present on the spot during the clash.
OC Mainur said additional police members deployed in the area to avert any further untoward incident.
“We are trying to identify the people who were involved with the incident,” he added.
The Chittagong City Corporation polls are scheduled to be held on March 29.
