Update : 26 Apr 2017, 03:38 PM
The BNP has demanded that Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya resign immediately over his failure to tackle the flood crisis in Haor areas of the north-eastern region. “The minister and his secretary have failed to respond properly to the crisis plaguing Haor regions of Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Netrokona and other areas,” BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu said on Wednesday, reports Bangla Tribune. “We demand that they take responsibility for their failure and step down,” he told a human chain in Dhaka. The recent flash floods have inundated thousands of hectares of Boro paddy fields in the Haor region, killed fishes and ducks, rendered numerous people marooned without food and drinking water.Shamsuzzaman Dudu BNP leader Shamsuzzaman Dudu alleges that the disaster in the Haor is the result of the government's corruption. File photo/Dhaka TribuneBoro paddy production has suffered a major setback and traders say the prices of rice will rise further if the situation does not improve. The government says it will provide relief materials to some 300,000 flood-affected families in Haor region. The central bank has postponed its agriculture credit recovery from Haor areas and instructed banks to provide new credits for different crops at a concessional interest rate. BNP leader Dudu alleged that the disaster in the Haor was the result of the government's corruption. “They have failed to take appropriate steps in time,” he said. “We demand an investigation into the matter and punishment for those responsible.” In many places, embankments sustained heavy damage or gave in to rising water pressure. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has already opened an investigation into the alleged corruption in the Haor protection embankment projects in Sunamganj.
