Bangladesh on the verge of becoming egg sufficient

Production would be 1781 crore and business TK 12,467 crore

Bangladesh is on the verge of becoming self-sufficient in egg production, and consumption. This will help the country to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN), said State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru. 

He said this during an event, jointly organized by Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC), held at the capital's Cirdap Auditorium marking the World Egg Day 2019 on Friday.

The minister, also the chief guest of the program, said that according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) - every person needs to eat at least 104 eggs a year to stay healthy. 

According to DLS, the country was very close to the target in the fiscal year (FY) 2018-2019, as every Bangladeshi, on an average, consumed 103 eggs during the period, and that figure is expected to increase to 105 in FY 2019-2020.

"With this achievement, Bangladesh will go ahead of neighbouring countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bhutan, and this has been a major achievement of our ministry.

"Government wants to ensure kids getting eggs in their school tiffin for proper nutrition, and good health." Khasru added. 

Eggs for proper health growth

During the event, Khaleda Islam, professor of Food and Nutrition Institute of Dhaka University, Elias Hossain, professor of Department of Poultry Science at Bangladesh Agricultural University presented their keynote papers titled "Egg and its nutritive value" and "The Nutrition in an Egg is Second to None" respectively. In these papers both the professors emphasised on the importance of eggs for ensuring proper nutrition and health growth of human beings.   

According to a recent study done by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) - the present day farm eggs have about 14% of cholesterol, and 34% more vitamins than those produced 10 years back.

By eating four eggs a week, the risk of type 2 diabetes is reduced by 37%. Besides, by consuming six eggs a week the chances of breast cancer are reduced by 40%. Moreover, only two eggs can provide one fourth of a woman's daily protein need.

Abu Luthfe Fazle Rahim Khan, president of the World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA) -- Bangladesh Branch, said that around Tk8,338.68 crore egg-centric trade happened during FY 2015-16, and by the end of FY 2019-20, egg trade in the country will be Tk12,467 crore more.

BPICC President Mosiur Rahman proposed that children, when they are in primary school, need to be made more aware  of the importance of eggs for proper nutrition. 

He said that if we can ensure two eggs per week for the working class people, including the RMG workers, their productivity will increase, and they will be able to work for longer periods.

Echoing the same, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Raichul Alam Mondal said that educated youth of the country should come to poultry business.

Among others,  Hiresh Ranjan Bhowmik, director general of the livestock department also spoke at the event. 

Earlier in the day, the organizers brought out a colourful procession which marched through a number of roads in the city, to mark the World Egg Day 2019.
