Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque has said that the people who raise question against the anti-militant drive are actually instigating militancy.
His comments came after some civil society leaders suggested law enforcers should conduct the drives responsibly so that the militants are not killed during the drives.
Since the last year’s Gulshan attack, around 45 militants, including women and children linked to New JMB, have been killed in raids across the country, while the law enforcers were able to arrest only 13 persons alive.
“We are requesting such people to behave responsibly,” he said, while addressing a programme at the police headquarters in Dhaka Sunday.
The programme was organised to honour the families of police officials who died during the recent anti-militant drives, the injured and brave police officers.
Shahidul Haque said: “Recently, we saw some political leaders deliver irresponsible speeches questioning our anti-militant raids, but the police and countrymen have unequivocally rejected their remarks.”
“These intentional or unintentional remarks by responsible people or organisations will fuel militancy. So we are urging all not to make such remark when the whole nation is united against militancy,” the IGP added.
During the programme, he handed over two cheques worth Tk20,00,000 each to the families of two police officials- Chowdhury Md Abu Kaisar and Mohammad Monirul Islam, who died in a blast near Atia Mahal in Sylhet last month.
Besides, Sylhet Metropolitan Police also handed over two cheques worth Tk4,00,000 each to the same families.
On Saturday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said militants were getting political patronisation. “The people who are raising questions about anti-militant drives are wilful sinners”.
