Members of Bangladesh Bank’s investigation committee have visited the site where a fire partially damaged the office of the Foreign Exchange Policy Department on Thursday night.
Executive Director Ahmed Jamal, chief of the probe body, and two of its members – Lt Col (retd) Md Mahmudul Haq Khan and the bank’s Common Services Department Officer Md Tofazzal Hossain – entered the central bank premises at around 10:25am on Friday.
Jamal told reporters that the losses from the blaze were "minimal".
"The fire might have originated due to an electric short circuit," he said.
The probe team was accompanied by General Manager of Policy and Strategies Department, Abu Farah Mohammad Naser, and some other senior officials. Jamal said it will submit a report by March 28.
The Fire Service deputy director (Dhaka) heads another five-member committee which has been asked to submit a report within five working days.
The fire gutted parts of the office of the Foreign Exchange Policy Department before 12 firefighting teams doused the fire within an hour, with no reports of casualties.
State Minister for Finance MA Mannan visited the spot on Thursday night and told media that it was not sabotage.
