Drive to free Bhola Canal starts

Update : 23 Mar 2017, 03:36 PM
The Bhola district administration demolished a number of illegal structures during an eviction drive on the banks of the Bhola Canal on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner Md Selim Uddin inaugurated the drive in the town’s Molla Bridge area, launched in line with a High Court order. There are 147 illegal establishments in the stretch between Molla Bridge and Bangla School Bridge of the canal, according to a list prepared by the administration. Most of those structures had been demolished during the drive, the DC said, adding that the drive would continue two more days. “As per the High Court’s directives, we issued notices to the occupants to remove the illegal structures from both sides of the canal.” On May 4, 2015, a High Court bench ordered the authorities concerned, including the district administration, the municipality and the land department, to free the canal from pollution and illegal occupation. The order came in response to a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environment Lawyers’ Association (BELA).
