Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Sunday, said that people are now restoring their trust and confidence in the police force. She mentioned that this is because the police are discharging their responsibilities with the utmost honesty, sincerity, and dedication— for the security of others.

"Now, the people’s confidence and trust in the police has returned, which is very important, I think," she said.

The prime minister said this while inaugurating the newly-established areas of responsibility for the Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) and Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP)—via a video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban, reports UNB.

She said that police personnel have been discharging their duties with honesty and they have been able to ensure people’s security.

Sheikh Hasina also mentioned that she had witnessed the: sincerity, honesty, cordiality, and devotion of police force members performing their responsibilities.

The Prime Minister thanked the police for their key role in containing militancy and terrorism in the country. "The police force has taken timely steps to curb militancy and terrorism and that’s why we’ve been able to attain success," she said.

Hasina said the government’s duty has always been about serving the people. "We want people to berapidly served by the police," she said adding that the government has formed the RMP and GPM for that purpose.

She said that every time Awami League comes to power it works to develop the police force; she  briefly described such development programmes undertaken by her government.

"We have worked to make the police force stronger and have developed it by using modern technologies so that they can properly discharge their public duties," she added.

Inspector General of Police Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary and Public Security Division Secretary of the Home Ministry Mostafa Kamal Uddin also spoke at the occasion.

Later, the Prime Minister talked to newly-appointed RMP Commissioner Md Abdul Alim Mahmud and GMP Commissioner YM Belalur Rahman via video conference.

The government published a gazette notification on December 10, 2017, creating 1,185 posts to form the RMP, as per the commitment made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, during her visit to Rangpur on January 8, 2011.

The RMP covers 239.72 square kilometers of land and six police stations — Kotwali, Porshuram, Hazirhat, Haragach, Tajhat and Mahiganj and several other police outposts.

The operational jurisdiction of Kotwali thana, with its headquarters at Mulatol, is comprised of 16 city wards.

Porshuram thana comprises four wards; Hazirhat thana comprises five wards; and Haragach thana comprises three wards, under the Haragach municipality and Sarai union of Kaunia upazila.

Tajhat thana comprisesfive wards, while Mahiganj thana has three wards of the city and Kalyani union of Pirgachha upazila, said the RMP Commissioner.

A total of 470 police personnel, including: one Police Commissioner, two Additional Police Commissioners, two Deputy Police Commissioners, and one Additional Deputy Police Commissioner, have joined the RMP. Meanwhile, 295 others are ready to begin their respective posts.

Gazipur City Corporation was formed on January 16, 2013, covering 330 square kilometres of the area—combined with six unions and Gazipur and Tongi municipalities.

Around 1,100 police members will perform their duties in eight police stations of the GMP.
