Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed concern over the return of hundreds of female, workers from the Middle East, following their torture.
In a statement on Sunday, the Berlin-based non-profit group sought government intervention on the issue.
According to the statement, 120 women returned home in the last week of June following torture in Middle Eastern countries—while in May, 260 female workers came back to Bangladesh.
TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman blamed the situation on a lack of good governance in the expatriate sector.
He said the inaction of responsible officials to address the issue is disappointing.
Iftekharuzzman urged the government to ensure the rights and safety of the tortured female workers—as well as arrange their rehabilitation.
The government should take effective measures so that these incidents do not reoccur, he said.
The TIB chief demanded punishment of the perpetrators and compensation for the victims.
A number of countries stopped sending female workers to Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, following allegations of torture.
Bangladesh should also follow the suit, Iftekharuzzman said.
